After 20 years owning PCs, I bought my first Mac. I have about 13,000 photos cataloged in Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to preserve my organization in iPhoto (or even if it's possible). Photoshop Album uses an external database that permits hierarchies, like Places - MDMontgomeryCo - Rockville eg. I probably have 30 or 40 counties, some with as many as 100 locations.
I don't think keywords are quite the same, although organizing by album might help. I've downloaded Keyword Assistant from a Mr. Ferry iirc, and that makes keywords much more manageable. But I can't imagine tagging to create anything like my hierarchy of places. Any thoughts or experience?

Jon Not being familiar with Adobe PS Album, I'm assuming that there is a folder structure, and if that is the case, it's very easy to migrate your structure. So, if you have a Folder - A- with enclosed folders: A1 A2 A3 and they have enclosed folders: A1a, A1b etc. Then starting at the bottom of the hierarchy drag the folders to the Source (or left-hand) pane in iPhoto where they will be created into albums.
So, first drag in A1a, A1b, the create (and name) an enclosing folder and proceed upwards through your file structure. The point with keywording is that it's not hierarchial. Tag a pic (or group of them) with A1a, then forget about them. Want to find them later, create a Smart Album, using the Keyword A1a.
Best yet, anytime you add a pic and tag it A1a, then it automatically gets added to the album, you don't have to navigate a million sub-folders to get to the bottom just to add to an album. To edit the roll titles, bring the info pane up (click on the i icon) and you can edit the name there. Jon: Welcome to the Apple Discussions. IPhoto will only handle keywords from the metadata that is user assignable. To use the other IPTC fields you'll need an application like or Aperture. IPhoto is limitied to keywords. Do you Twango? TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc.
That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance. Thank you both for your thoughts and suggestions.

Folders won't work, in part because I like to tag a single photo in multiple hierarchies. It could be 'Family/Toby', 'Places/DESussexCo/Bethany', and 'Events/AngelReunion'. I should research IPTC more. I think it's used by the full Photoshop editor, but not PS Album 2.0. In terminal I did a 'strings DSCNxxxx.JPG more' on one of the files in my Album 2.0 catalog.
It shows the EXIF information in plain text at the top of the file, but I didn't see any of the tagging information nor any IPTC header. Of course IPTC could be stored in binary format. I'm pretty sure Album 2.0 stores its tags in its (slow) database. IView MediaPro looks interesting. If it's as fast as iPhoto it would be worth the $200.
What I'd really like is a migration path that preserves my existing database. That may not be possible, even with Adobe. Many thanks, Jon A. I have exactly the same problem - except I haven't got my new MacBook yet 😉 I have been doing some research, though, and the chances of getting the tagging out of PSA 2.0 seem very small. However, I have found three theoretical possibilities. 1) I have tried the first steps of this 'solution' without any success, but I will mention it anyway, perhaps you are more lucky: There is a PC based photo cataloging application called IMatch ( ).
For this application someone has created a set of scripts, the first of which is capable of extracting the PSA 2.0 catalog into a plain text file ( ). I have been unable to make this work, but if you succeed, a second script (mentioned on the above website) should be able to import the tags into IMatch. As I understand, IMatch is capable of embedding the tags as IPTC keywords in the image files. I guess you could use a free trial version of IMatch for this operation, and if you should get this far, it should be possible to import the IPTC keywords info into iPhoto with this script ( ). Well, this was all theory, but maybe it could be useful. 2) A second possibility is, that PSA 2.0 stores its caption in the EXIF Description field.
Assuming you don't use the caption in PSA 2.0, you could go through your catalog one tag after another and write each tag into the captions of all the images, it is attached to. If it's possible to search in the EXIF Description feld in iPhoto, you could reverse the process when you have imported the images into iPhoto. 3) Newer versions of PSA (called Photoshop Elements) exist for the Mac. I guess they must be able to import from older versions of PSA, but I don't know.
I don't know if this is of any use, but I just wanted to share my own thougts of this process. Well, this one is much simpler - I just got this advice at the Adobe Elements Forums: If in PSA you use File/Attach to E-mail. On one or more images, you can choose to Incluce Tags with Photos. In this case, the tags are written to the image file(s) as IPTC Keywords.
Furthermore, you don't have to actually mail the images: In PSA 2.0 preferences, the E-mail section, you can tell PSA to Send E-mail using: 'Other (save to disk)' and then specify the location. Now, all you have to do is select all or some of your images, and 'mail' them to the folder. Then it should be possible to import them into iPhoto and use this script ( ) to convert the IPTC keywords to iPhoto keywords. Of course, you will loose your hierachical tag structur, but all your tags should be intact. I can't wait to try this myself 😉. What I want to avoid, however, is repeating plenty hours of tagging just because I migrated my photos from PSA to iPhoto Question refering to CaBe's last entry: Apparently, you found at least part of the solution by using this 'email-export function' of PSA. Now you say that 'iPhoto imported the IPTC-keywords by itself'. The keyword will be added to the keyword list in iPhoto and show below the thumbnail if you have keywords set to be displayed in the View menu.
However, any keyword added by iPhoto will not be written back to the file. That's a shortcoming of iPhoto which we hope will be remedied in the next release. Do you Twango?
